The Alaska Academic Decathlon brings together high school students to compete in ten subjects based on a yearly theme. The program builds valuable social and emotional skills while improving student achievement and building confidence. It also engages students of all abilities (teams must include students of a wide spectrum of GPAs), often attracting non-joiners and students who are underperforming in school.

The program culminates with a four-day state competition on the University of Alaska (UAA) Campus where students interact with teams from around the state, UAA faculty and staff, and statewide high school educators. The event kicks off with a college/job fair and ends with an award ceremony where students earn medals and scholarships.
